History of De Vesci Lawn Tennis Club

Founded in 1895, De Vesci Lawn Tennis Club began when a group of local tennis enthusiasts obtained permission to use a vacant field behind De Vesci Gardens. Initially controlled by the landowners of De Vesci Terrace, the club moved to Kingswood in 1934, leasing a field from Viscount de Vesci for £10 per year.

In the early years, the club lacked a proper clubhouse, relying on a wooden summer house for changing facilities. This modest structure, painted red and white, was used primarily by men, while the ladies had to make do with the limited privacy provided by surrounding trees and hedges. In 1958, a new clubhouse with dressing rooms and other amenities was opened by Viscount de Vesci, offering much-needed comfort and facilities.

Originally, the club's courts were grass, but due to drainage issues and the need for more court time, two grass courts were converted to hard courts in 1978. By 1983, four new Savanna Courts were laid down, painted red and green, and equipped with floodlights for year-round use. These courts allowed members to play even during the winter months and after dark.

Further developments in 1991 enabled the continuous use of courts 1 and 2 throughout the year. The club's membership grew steadily, and it began competing in the Dublin Lawn Tennis Council summer league. The introduction of synthetic surfaces, such as Savanna or hardcore, which require minimal maintenance, has also contributed to the club's growth and popularity.

Despite flooding in 1994, repairs were carried out to ensure the club's future growth and success. Contractors, aided by club members, worked diligently to restore the courts, ensuring that De Vesci Lawn Tennis Club remained a prominent and strategic club in the area.

Today, De Vesci Lawn Tennis Club boasts modern facilities, including four floodlit Savanna Courts, and a thriving membership. The club continues to compete in local leagues and provides a welcoming environment for tennis enthusiasts of all levels. With a rich history and a commitment to growth and development, De Vesci Lawn Tennis Club is poised for continued success in the years to come.
